What is a city directory?
Sometimes called a criss cross directory, city directories are a valuable source of
information to the past, present and future for anyone who is searching.
Whether it be for genealogy search, adoption search, looking for an old classmate
or lost love, city directories can help you find who you are looking for!
What kind of information?
City directories contain names addresses, telephone numbers, occupations and
whether or not they are head of house or boarder. They can be searched using a
name, address, or phone number, and also contain advertising for local
businesses.
Are there directories for all cities and states?
A company called R. L. Polk has been making these directories for over 150 years,
as well as other lesser known companies that also make county directories. I
know I will not be collecting all the books available, but I am working on collecting
what I can in areas of interest. Please see the Directories page for a list of the
current books.
What areas are being collected?
Right now I am collecting cities in the following states:
Iowa, Pennsylvania, New York.
